About Urban South Brewery
The Urban South story starts in New Orleans, LA after founder and President, Jacob Landry, spent a year traveling in Europe, tasting Belgian and English ales along with German lagers gaining his inspiration to open in 2016. Fast forward to February 2020 and Urban South – HTX was opened to both proliferate the brand and promote experimentation.
Urban South – HTX has really experienced impressive growth and community support in such a short time and we had to know more. We reached out, virtually of course, and Tap Room Manager Marin Slanina thankfully got us the full story!
Passion for the craft brewing industry
Marin has quite the experience in the craft beer industry and in addition to managing an entire taproom, is also responsible for marketing and promotions for the Houston, Texas location. Marin describes her entrance and motivation in this industry, “The love of craft beer as a community experience brought me into this amazing industry and it’s what keeps me creating and growing every day!”
She is most passionate about two main things; “The creation process from “Grain to Glass” and the rocking parties that we plan to host around our awesome beer!” We couldn’t agree more! Marin is also a big fan of Lagers; well brewed and cellared specifically.
Challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic
Since the COVID-19 pandemic has hit, Marin’s focus has been to make sure all of their guests are still feeling the Houston love from to-go sales since the taproom closed. They have certainly had to be more creative as Marin describes, “We’ve turned our live action taproom into a virtual show and have used social media and other platforms to connect with our guests. We wanted to bring our tap room into their very own home.”
Moving forward with support
They have had more time to experiment with new recipes but have been more focused on turning and burning through tanks and into cans as fast as possible, in order to provide a wide variety of to go beers for all their at home guests.
Urban South’s latest creation includes The Spilled series which is a heavily fruited sour. Marin’s favorite so far is the Shirley Temple!
Texas is one of a few states that has begun to open up. Breweries can operate at 25% capacity starting Friday May 22. Marin’s positivity really shines through when speaking about the local Houston, Texas community. Marin elaborates, “We just love the Craft Beer Community as a whole. Our Houston family and beyond has been so supportive of the brewery and have even stopped by multiple times in one week. Some have even stopped multiple times in one day to pick up all new beer!”
Thank you!
We want to extend a big thank you to Marin at Urban South Brewery for participating in this initiative during American Craft Beer Week! Our goal is to celebrate your brewery and tell your story during this difficult time. Malteurop Malting Company is always here to support you and your business during this difficult time.
