American Single Malt Whiskey: A New Era for American Distillers

American Single Malt Whiskey has officially joined the ranks of recognized whiskey categories in the United States. As of December 18, 2024, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) has established a formal standard of identity for this distinctive spirit, marking a significant milestone for American distillers.
According to the TTB’s final rule, to be labeled as American Single Malt Whiskey, a product must adhere to the following criteria:
Note that the TTB formal standard for American Single Malt Whiskey does not require the malted barley to be grown or malted in the United States. It must, however, be mashed, distilled, and aged entirely within the United States.
Malteurop Malting Company offers an array of malted barley products grown and malted in North America that are perfect for any distiller producing American Single Malt Whiskey. Our MMC Distillers Malt is a diastatic powerhouse designed for any continuous distillation. MMC Pot Still Malt is crafted with the enzymatic activity targeted to pot still distillation. Either MMC distiller-specific malt is well-suited to combine with any other base or specialty barley malt to craft a unique American Single Malt Whiskey.

The push for an official American Single Malt Whiskey designation has been a long and determined effort by distillers across the country. For years, American whiskey producers have been crafting single malt expressions, but without a standardized definition, these whiskeys lacked a clear identity in the marketplace.
The American Single Malt Whiskey Commission (ASMWC), formed in 2016, played a crucial role in advocating for the category’s official recognition. Their mission was to establish a formal identity that would allow American distillers to compete on the global stage, much like Scotch Single Malt and Japanese Single Malt whiskeys. After years of discussions, industry backing, and a public comment period, the TTB finally approved the designation, solidifying American Single Malt Whiskey as a legitimate and protected category.
“This is a landmark ruling by TTB and validation for years’ worth of work by American distillers to define American Single Malt. It has been over 52 years since a new type of whiskey was added our federal regulations,” said ASMWC President Steve Hawley.
“We applaud TTB for formalizing the category which will signal to the world that not only do we believe in and support our own distilleries, but we also recognize that American Single Malt Whiskey is unique and deserves to be defined and protected as other American whiskey categories are. Most importantly, this new definition ensures that consumers worldwide can have every confidence that what they think is in a bottle of American Single Malt Whiskey actually is.”

American Single Malt Whiskey distinguishes itself from other American whiskey types through its unique production methods and ingredient specifications:
In contrast, American Single Malt Whiskey is exclusively crafted from malted barley at a single distillery, emphasizing a malt-forward flavor profile.
The official recognition of American Single Malt Whiskey by the TTB carries significant implications for distillers across the nation:

For craft distillers, this new designation is particularly impactful. It offers an avenue to showcase unique, locally produced single malt whiskeys, differentiating their offerings in a competitive market. The recognition also opens doors to educational initiatives, helping consumers understand and appreciate the distinct qualities of American Single Malt Whiskey.
The TTB’s formalization of American Single Malt Whiskey as an official category not only validates the efforts of distillers who have been crafting this spirit, but also sets the stage for future growth and innovation within the American whiskey industry.
