Malteurop’s own barley breeding program has had another very successful year in the American Malting Barley Association’s 2019 Pilot Scale Evaluation. If you’re not familiar with our program, we’re the only non-brewer maltster with our own breeding program, located in Irwell, New Zealand. It’s a Double Haploid system, which our breeder, Anna Marie Andersen, has been using this more complex method for decades, well before any breeding program in North America was using it. What does that mean for breeding better barley? The crosses are genetically stable as soon as they are created, not after several generations of weeding out impure lines. They can be brought to our test plots in North America much sooner. This can shave two to three years off the very long time it takes to bring a variety up to commercial scale for brewers to start enjoying the improved agronomics and quality!<\/p>\n

Our breeding program for North America started when we identified that the growing Craft brewing industry had only very “hot” enzymatic varieties suitable for full attenuation in mainstream lagers. The program relies heavily on European germplasm to bring a more traditional level of attenuation, but can still handle the shorter and more extreme growing season in North America. Our first variety to be added to AMBA’s Recommended List was Expedition in 2013. We are currently in the last phase of receiving Plant Variety Protection status for our second variety.<\/p>\n

Thirty-four lines from eight different breeding programs were tested, with only nineteen receiving Satisfactory ratings. Again this year, Malteurop had all of its five lines rated as Satisfactory, the most for all of the programs.<\/p>\n

Over the last five years of Pilot Scale testing, Malteurop has achieved Satisfactory ratings 72% of the time versus 46% for all of the other breeding programs combined.
