One of those partners is Griffin Claw Brewing Company in Birmingham and Rochester Hills, Michigan. Founded in 2013, they focus on all things craft, including beer, spirits, ciders, and food. But they are well aware that beer is just the beginning.

This is their story of a worldwide open-ended beer collaboration created to raise awareness for individuals with Down syndrome.

– – –

“In 2015, my wife and I were blessed with our second son, Ian, who was born with Down syndrome, and our world was flipped upside-down.” (Pat Craddock)

“When my daughter GiGi was born, I thought my family’s life would change forever. About an hour after she was born, the doctors suspected she had Down syndrome…We were petrified!” (Nancy Gianni)

This isn’t a story about how two people fell apart. It’s one about how they came together. Pat Craddock is the Chief Financial Officer at Griffin Claw Brewing Company and the driving force behind the TRI-21 Project. Nancy Gianni is the founder of GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Centers. Both recognized a need in their community and brought a plan to fruition.

The Craft Beer Community

Those that know the craft brewing industry understand that it’s not just a business, it’s a community. One where people are consistently collaborative. Unfailingly, people in this industry come together when there’s a need.

So when Pat and his wife found out their son had Down syndrome, Pat knew he had to do something, and he knew it had to involve the craft beer community. At that time, he was working for another brewery just trying to get through life, but there was always this itch to do something in the beer industry to help his son and others like him.

What is Down Syndrome and the TRI-21 Project?

Meet Pat Craddock, the mastermind behind the TRI-21 Project. While his official title is CFO of Griffin Claw Brewing Company, Pat wears many hats. So it wasn’t a surprise to anyone when he came up with the idea to create a recipe and brew a beer to bring about awareness, acceptance, and funds to those with Down syndrome.

There are three types of Down syndrome with the most common being Trisomy 21. This is caused by an error in cell division resulting in an embryo with three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two. (National Down Syndrome Society)

Inspired by Sierra Nevada’s Resilience project, getting critical funds to those impacted by California’s Camp Fire, Pat finally launched the TRI-21 Project in late September 2021. Now live, just in time for World Down Syndrome month in October, breweries can sign up to participate, bringing crucial funds, awareness, and acceptance to one of the most familiar, yet still mysterious birth defects, Down syndrome.

And it doesn’t stop in October. It starts in October and goes well beyond. Pat envisions the TRI-21 Project New England Double IPA being released from now all the way to World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, 2022.

With many impressive partners on board, including Malteurop, offering discounts to breweries that sign up, not only will participating breweries be helping a great cause, but they will also be building future relationships. And in the end, that’s what this is about. Connecting people with others to create awareness around a project that is both necessary and wanted.

Pat says it himself, “The participating vendors have been amazing to work with. I have a solid relationship with Nicole (Henzel) from Malteurop; the folks at Briess; Doug at Hopsteiner; the team and Steve at Yakima Chief Hops; Patrick at Blue Label; the team at Craftpeak who built the site; Louder than Digital for marketing assistance; and Skidmore, the design firm that spearheaded the label, even weaving Ian’s name into the artwork. And I have to give a lot of credit to Malteurop for offering up Dextrin, as well.”

How Does the TRI-21 Project Work?

The hard work has already been done, including creating a recipe that honors the project, referencing TRI-21 throughout the ingredients: three grains representing TRI and two hops and one yeast representing 21. However, working in the brewing industry himself, Pat understands that brewers love innovating, so the recipe itself can be made verbatim or simply as a guide to get started.

The TRI-21 Project is simple. Any brewery can participate. Get started by clicking here. Download the recipe, which is designed to be flexible and open to creativity. Contact the vendors for discounts on both malts and hops. Have a brew day like no other, knowing that there’s more than just beer being brewed. Download and print the artwork at no cost. Consider hosting a release party to celebrate the success of building community. Donate the funds to GiGi’s Playhouse.

Where Do the Funds Go?

When Pat’s son was born, he found immense support at GiGi’s Playhouse, a local company that focuses on global acceptance of Down syndrome and offers a multitude of resources to anyone impacted by this genetic disorder.

Founded in the Midwest, GiGi’s now has over 50 locations across the U.S. and one in Mexico. While the TRI-21 project is about raising funds, more importantly it’s about connecting with others and with an organization that is focused on changing the way people view Down syndrome.

“My goal for Ian is to be able to live on his own as an adult, and that’s a tall task for someone with Down syndrome, but with resources like GiGi’s out there, they help get kids to that level.” (Pat Craddock)

How is Malteurop Collaborating with the TRI-21 Project?

Pat and the Griffin Claw team have been working with Malteurop for years. Nicole Henzel, Malteurop’s Midwest Craft Sales Manager, believes relationships and education are a major component of her role at Malteurop, so when Pat approached Nicole to see if they wanted to be involved with the TRI-21 Project, Nicole didn’t hesitate when she said yes.

And Pat felt the same. “We knew we wanted to use Malteurop Pilsen for this recipe because we see a lot of great results with it. We were pretty adamant when building the recipe that that was going to be our base malt, along with flaked oats. And then Malteurop stepped in with their Dextrin, too.”

The grain bill for the TRI-21 Project Double New England IPA consists of Pilsen, flaked oats, and Dextrin.

Malteruop Pilsen Malt is the lightest of Malteurop’s two-row base malts, and it imparts a sweet and subtle malt flavor with a straw yellow to light golden color. It provides an excellent canvas for other specialty malts, making it the perfect malt to combine the flaked oats and Dextrin for this recipe.

Dextrin works as a bodybuilder, ensuring just the right amount of head retention and beer stability while providing fullness of mouthfeel. Dextrin is exactly what you need in a New England IPA without adding unwanted flavors.

Flaked Oats add a creaminess to the body and mouthfeel, giving it that hazy look and flavor we all come to expect from a hazy IPA.

TRI-21 Project: A Collaborative Project Starting with Beer and Ending with Connections

We asked Pat if Ian had any idea what his dad was doing for him and others with Down syndrome. And like any six-year-old who loves to play in wide open places, Ian is the same.

“He loves coming to the taproom. Taprooms are the best places for kids because it’s loud and there are other parents and kids. He loves the beer garden and the food. While he doesn’t quite grasp that his dad is in beer, he knows and sees the (Griffin Claw) logo, and he gets it.”

Beer is just the entry ticket into community. Kids, especially, can see that.

The TRI-21 Project was born out of a desire to help a child, but it will endure out of a continued desire to build community.

– – –

Griffin Claw Brewing Project currently has their TRI-21 Double New England Hazy IPA available in both taprooms. For the status on availability at other breweries, click here, and check back often.

If you know of other breweries that may be interested in participating in this project, send them to tri21project.com or tag them on Instagram using #tri21project.

Malteurop Malting Company is offering a 20% discount on its Pilsen, Dextrin, and Flaked Oats. Contact your sales rep or click here to get started.

"_seopress_social_twitter_img_attachment_id":0
[19

post-884","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-brewery-spotlight
["GET
