Roughly 1 in 13 adults in the U.S. have asthma. 1 in 10 Americans have diabetes.

One in four women will experience some form of domestic violence or intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

How many women do you know? Everyone has a mom… a grandma. Most of us have aunts or sisters or cousins or friends. One in every four of them is going to experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime. That is mortifyingly unacceptable.

Domestic violence doesn’t discriminate, either. In their lifetime, one in nine men will also experience some form of domestic violence or intimate partner violence.

This is a problem that is far too massive and far too troubling to ignore.

That is why Matt Cisz and Third Space Brewing started the One in Four initiative to benefit the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV). And that is why we at Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) didn’t hesitate to help, along with additional support from the folks at Yakima Chief Hops and Blue Label Packaging Co.

What is the One in Four initiative?

One in Four is a worldwide collaboration aimed at raising funds for domestic violence prevention, but more importantly, to start conversations in the communities that we all call home. We all need to take a stand against all forms of domestic or intimate partner violence, and this is one way to start.

Third Space Brewing started One in Four with the hope that other breweries join the endeavor. We at MMC and Third Space’s other industry partners have lent our support and resources to make this as easy as possible for breweries to participate. The recipe, artwork, and promotional material have been created and are freely available to all that wish to participate.

All that Third Space asks is that anyone that takes part releases their version of the One in Four IPA sometime in October to help fill bars and retail shelves with the color purple, the color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. They ask that breweries donate proceeds to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) or a local organization of their choosing that helps those who have been affected by domestic violence or intimate partner violence.

This is Personal: Why Matt Cisz Acted Now

The sheer act of domestic violence is highly personal, even for those that are not immediately in the act itself. That is what drove Third Space lead brewer Matt Cisz to get involved. His 27-year-old niece, Karissa Peronto, was murdered in an act of domestic violence by her former partner.

The scary thing is that Karissa did everything she could to prevent the situation. She made a safety plan. She alerted local law enforcement and the security team at the health center where she worked. Karissa changed her locks and added extra security measures at her home. She regularly checked in with family and even spent many nights staying with friends or relatives away from her home.

In the end, it still wasn’t enough. And it won’t be enough until we can find a way to stop these horrifying incidents from happening. That very personal tragedy is what drove Matt to start the One in Four initiative.

“This was just too important and too emotional not to follow through with,” Matt said, recounting the day his wife called him at work to deliver the tragic news of his niece.

“You see the news and you see those stories and you think that’s never going to happen to anyone I know.” Until it does. “With how sweet and how caring Karissa was… for that life to be taken so early in life, I couldn’t sit back and do nothing.”

MMC’s Involvement with One in Four

Everything we do at Malteurop is with the support of our brewer partners in mind. That goes well beyond the business of brewing beer. Our Craft Sales Managers and our entire Customer Success Team always go above and beyond with any need any brewer might have, and that goes for our brewer partners committing to crucial initiatives like One in Four.

We wanted to be a significant partner in this effort, so we’re offering 30-percent off the cost of any MMC malts brewers use in their One in Four IPA. All the One in Four partners are offering discounts to join us in making involvement as easy as possible for any size brewery to brew the beer and donate proceeds to a non-profit of their choosing.

“From the malt side, Nichole Henzel at Malteurop was the first person I reached out to. I didn’t even have to ask them to be part of it, they’re like, yeah, we’re in. What do you need?” Matt recalled.

One in Four IPA Recipe

OG: 13.5° P or 1.055 SG | FG: 2.5° P or 1.010 SG

MASH TEMP: 154° F or 68° C (adjust based on your system)

WATER PROFILE: Milwaukee is known for having hard water. Adjust your water accordingly and tweak as needed.

GRAIN BILL:

75% Malteurop Pilsen

15% Malteurop Munich 5L

10% Malteurop Wheat

Accidulated malt as needed

HOP BILL:

Boil – 60 minutes: 15 IBU using house bittering hop

Whirlpool: Idaho 7 (0.5lb/bbl) + Simcoe (0.5lb/bbl)

Dry Hop: HBC 630 (1.0lb/bbl) + Idaho 7 (0.25lb/bbl) + Simcoe (0.25lb/bbl)

YEAST: Chico Ale or your house ale strain

NOTES: This recipe can be modified based on your own system. If you wish to make this a hazy or “cold” IPA, adjust your water and bittering levels accordingly.

What is Munich 5L and Why It Fit One in Four IPA

Munich 5L is our newest malt, as we continue to develop new and exciting products for our brewer partners. It is a highly kilned base malt with enough diastatic power to be used in large quantities. Similar to our Munich base malt, Munich 5L is a good bit lighter in color imparting golden yellow to light amber hues.

We are honored that Matt and Third Space chose our new MMC Munich 5L malt alongside our venerable Pilsen and Wheat malts. Pilsen offers a subtly sweet malt base, while Munich 5L provides a unique depth with its rich maltiness with slightly bready and nutty aromas to enhance the dark fruit flavors that the Yakima Chief hops provide, building on Matt’s idea of a mental image of a “purple” taste. MMC Wheat aids in head retention and provides for a fuller mouthfeel.

In developing the recipe, Matt wanted to create a beer that represented the color purple because it is the color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Instead of somehow coming up with a gimmicky way to make the beer itself purple, Matt developed the beer flavor itself to make the drinker think purple as they sip One in Four IPA.

“My whole kind of vision for this was can we create a beer that gives that vibe of the color purple?”

That was front of mind as Matt and the brew team opted for Simcoe as one of the primary hops. “It’s just you get some berry, you get some other dark fruit, it’s just like you smell it and you think purple.”

The addition of Idaho 7’s berry and sometimes bubble gummy notes, as well as the experimental HBC 630 hop, which presents as raspberry, should help the beer trigger the thought of purple in the drinker’s mind.

Matt was particularly excited to use our new Munich 5L, as he wanted depth on the malt side, but not the darker color that often comes with that depth.

“Munich 5L is a lighter malt that still has some of those bready, nutty characteristics, but also lends some of the color. Sometimes if you use too much (regular) Munich, the beer can get too dark. So this is a way that we could slightly deepen the color of that Pilsen malt, but also add some more depth and character.”

Everything You Need to Know About One in Four IPA

How to get involved?

Visit oneinfour.beer to sign up and let Third Space know your plans for the beer release and your non-profit partner. Kevin and Andy are Milwaukee natives that have known each other since a chance meeting at summer camp. Their friendship and their love of beer drove them to create Third Space, which in addition to focusing on handcrafted beer, is meant to be that third space, somewhere to put work and life on pause surrounded by a community that enjoys great beer with great company.

Disenchanted with his corporate life, Matt made the jump from homebrewing to pro brewer by joining the ranks of Third Space’s brew team under master brewer Kevin Wright’s guidance. He’s fully embraced a supportive company that has embraced what is important to its community and its employees.

“That’s one thing that’s never been in question at Third Space. If we’re going to do something, let’s give back to the community. If it’s something a team member feels strongly about, let’s do it, let’s support their cause and get behind it,” Matt said, knowing he has his employer’s full support to make a difference and honor his niece’s memory.

“To start real change, we need to have conversations with the people in our community. Have a serious conversation and stop talking Democrat, Republican, whatever the case may be, and understand that we all have people in our lives that are hurting, that need our help.”

One in four women and one in nine men will experience some form of domestic violence or intimate partner violence in their lifetime.
