When that first brave human had the life altering chance encounter with some fermented fruit, thousands of years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n But the first recorded instance of it, in England, at least, was 450 CE, at a feast. A Saxon ally, Hengist, was honoring a British King, King Vortigern. Hengist\u2019s daughter was also in attendance. Knowing exactly how to charm both her father and a king, she gave King Vortigern a goblet of wine alongside the following words that now forever hold a place in history.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cLouerd King, waes hael!\u201d (Translated to mean Good health!)<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The King henceforth fell madly in love and immediately proposed marriage. Or so the story goes.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Today, a toast of good health does not immediately elicit a marriage proposal; a relief to many of us who simply want to enjoy good company and good drinks.
