Cheers, Sláinte, Prost: How to say cheers across the globe

January 3, 2024

Clinking glasses of a beautiful beverage and saying cheers is a longheld tradition. But where did it begin and how do people say cheers in different parts of the world?

Cheers: wishing each other well and extending good wishes

A treasured tradition shared by many across the globe is one of simplicity, yet brings people together with one common wish – Cheers!

Whether it’s a new year, a birthday celebration, a promotion, a birth, or even a death, the clinking of glasses together is a language understood by many.

Here, at Malteurop, we hope those glasses are filled with a handcrafted beer or a fine quality spirit, of course.

But regardless of the liquid gold held within your glass, it’s the simple action of all of us coming together over a good drink. A wish to all for what’s to come, what has gone by, and what is in the moment now.

But where did this cheers thing come from?

Toasting – that traditional form of clinking glasses together has probably been around since the dawn of drinking. When that first brave human had the life altering chance encounter with some fermented fruit, thousands of years ago.

But the first recorded instance of it, in England, at least, was 450 CE, at a feast. A Saxon ally, Hengist, was honoring a British King, King Vortigern. Hengist’s daughter was also in attendance. Knowing exactly how to charm both her father and a king, she gave King Vortigern a goblet of wine alongside the following words that now forever hold a place in history.

“Louerd King, waes hael!” (Translated to mean Good health!)

The King henceforth fell madly in love and immediately proposed marriage. Or so the story goes.

Today, a toast of good health does not immediately elicit a marriage proposal; a relief to many of us who simply want to enjoy good company and good drinks. Still, those simple words uttered thousands of years ago, gave us the perfect words to drink to – all across the globe.

How do you say “Cheers!” in other languages?

And if you do happen to be across the globe, we’ve got 15 different ways to say, “Cheers!” Or “Good Health!” Or “Long Lives!” Or whatever words are uttered when we join together over the clinking of glasses.

Cheers Across the Globe

No matter where in the world you are, no matter whom you are with, no matter the language spoken, coming together, glasses in hand, we wish you cheers, good health, and long lives!
